Chapter 17
Natalia
Some days were sunshine and fucking rainbows. Today was not one of those days. The midday sun was hot like a whore whoâd just fucked for her next hit, or the drunk who scored their next drink. Then again it was fall in NOLA.
Living farther north in Louisiana had its perks. The humidity was still god-awful, but at least Shreveport didnât have the smell of puke around every corner.
Home sweet home.
Natalia sipped her water and set down the glass while she stared at the knife given to her. When Maul handed it over, she didnât expect that to happen. Then again, if he was guilty, heâd just laid out his losing hand. He wasnât an idiot. It was obvious he didnât do it. Why give up the murder weapon?
Someone passed by her office door, and she looked up. It was a new female detective, someone whoâd transferred to New Orleans.
Natalia smiled whilst staring at her plate of food. âHey, Enzo.â
Her partner looked up.
She glanced over to him and frowned. âDrop the puppy-dog eyes. Weâre working here.â
He chuckled. âSorry, canât help it. Youâre gorgeous.â
A slight smirk turned up the right side of her mouth. âThank you. Now seriously. The new chick who just joined the unit.â
âYeah? What about her?â Enzo stood and crossed the room, hands on his hips. He looked out her office window and pointed. âYeah, I see her. You need her?â
âNo, but I have a question.â
âNot sure I can answer it. I donât know much about her,â he said and went back to his desk. He picked up his coffee cup and took a sip.
âSheâs vegan, right?â
He shrugged and took another sip.
âHmm, now Iâm curious. You think she swallows? You know, since sheâs vegan?â
Enzo coughed and dropped his mug. It shattered on the floor, and he busted out laughing. No, scratch that. The man openly howled with laughter.
She raised her brow, sat back in her chair, and crossed her arms over her chest. âIâll let you catch your breath and clean up your mess before we dare continue.â
He swiped his arm across his mouth, then laughed a little harder. âI cannot believeââhe laughed again, his eyes producing tearsââyou asked that.â
âItâs a valid fucking question! I mean, come on. Itâs protein!â
âStop,â he yelled and laid his arms on his desk. He rested his forehead on his arms, and his back twitched with laughter.
She rolled her eyes and looked back down at the paperwork from the scene. No one had mentioned anything about a knife being found, but there was a stab wound in his chest.
But demons cannot be killed by a mere use of a knife.
She thought back to Buck and Phuck invoking his shift.
A rap at the door caught her attention, and she prayed it wasnât the vegan-who-might-not-swallow girl. The door opened, and one of the lab techs stepped inside. He was a younger man, mid-twenties and Asian. He asked to be called Doug because apparently his birth name was too hard to pronounce. He opened his mouth to say something, then glanced at a hysterical Enzo.
